Frequently Asked Questions
Medicare offers rebates for a number of imaging clinical indications. However not all indications are covered by Medicare. We will advise you when booking your PET/CT scan if there will be any out-of-pocket costs to you. Please contact us if you have any queries about the cost of your scan.
Most patients spend approximately 2 to 3 hours at MTIC for their appointment.
You can bring someone with you for the first part of the appointment where we ask you some routine questions related to your scan and medical history. They will then be asked to leave for the resting portion of the test and the scan. Please avoid bringing young children with you for your appointment.
Please bring your Medicare card alongside any medications you may require while you are with us.
You can bring a device (e.g. phone or tablet) to help pass the time. However, if your scan requires a resting time, you will need to remain relaxed to avoid using your muscles. This means you cannot physically hold or use your device, read a book or magazine. You will be able to watch or listen to something.
Most patients with claustrophobia find this test quite easy. We will thoroughly explain the process during the appointment and will be able to answer and questions or concerns you may have. Please call to discuss if you have any concerns.
PET scans are very safe, and millions have been performed around the world without any complications. The amount of radiation being injected is very small and most of it is passed out of the body in your urine by the end of the day. If you have any further concerns, please speak to a staff member during your appointment.
There are no side effects when having a PET scan. Once you have finished your scan you can resume all your normal activities, this includes eating and drinking.
If you have been booked in for a CT scan in addition to your PET scan you may be given an injection of CT contrast, the potential side effects of this will be discussed with you during the appointment.
We will send your results to your referring doctor. We are unable to tell you your results during your PET scan appointment. If you would like your results sent to another doctor please inform our administration staff and they will arrange this.
